The cat’s tongue is covered by numerous sensory knobs called papillae, of which several types exist. Their ears are mobile and can move independently of one other, allowing cats to pinpoint sounds with accuracy. The paw pads are also acutely sensitive and help the cat when grasping prey. This cat “radar” is vital to the cat’s ability to move about and hunt in low-light conditions. The eyebrows and hairs of the cheek, chin, legs, and ears are extremely sensitive to vibrations and provide cats with a great deal of information. The whiskers (vibrissae) are touch receptors that are vital to the cat’s hunting ability.

This enables cats to see six to eight times better in the dark than humans can. Now, there are an estimated 600 million domestic cats living around the world. Since domestic cats today aren’t related to leopard cats, the harmony doesn’t seem to have lasted. Domestic cats have 19 pairs of chromosomes and, like humans, one pair of sex chromosomes determining their sex (two X chromosomes for females, one X and one Y chromosome for males). The International Cat Association® (TICA®) is the world’s largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats and the largest registry of household pet cats and kittens. Another, independent foray into cat domestication occurred in China about 5,000 years ago with another wildcat species the leopard cat. Modern-day cats descended from a subspecies of African wildcat, Felis silvestris lybica, which today is the most common and widespread wildcat.
